I did hair on cruise ships for 15 years. Here are the 4 tools I'd never recommend, and the one that saves your photos.

Dana Collins, former shipboard stylist

Words by Dana Collins

Former Shipboard Stylist

Fifteen years. Thousands of women in my chair. Nearly all of them there for the same reason: she packed the tool she trusts at home, and the ship beat it.

Dead outlet. No counter space. Twenty minutes before formal night. And photos she'll be looking at for the next ten years.

Here's why each one fails at sea, and what I pack instead.

HERO · MATCH THE AD FRAME

Dana on the cruise deck. 60+, perfectly styled hair, warm and direct to camera, ocean behind her. Match the ad frame so the click lands on the same face she was just listening to. A/B against: woman, late 50s, wedged into a cabin bathroom, cold flat iron, cord stretched to a socket behind the toilet.

Your cabin has one outlet you can actually reach, and it's behind the bed or behind the toilet. The one by the mirror looks perfect. It isn't. It's a shaver socket, built for a razor, rated for a fraction of what a hot tool pulls.

So the flat iron you've used every morning for six years either trips the breaker, never gets properly hot, or quietly dies. And you're standing in a bathroom the size of a phone box with dinner seating in forty minutes.

Say you win anyway. You step out on deck and the sea air takes it back in ninety seconds.

Then formal night comes.

Everyone's dressed. The photographer is working the stairs. Your table is doing the group shot. And you're the one angling away from the camera.

I watched it happen every single cruise. It was never a skill problem not once.

The four I'd leave at home

1. The flat iron with a voltage converter

NO. 1

Full-size flat iron across a tiny cruise sink, bulky white voltage converter wedged into a socket behind the toilet, plates dark. Cramped, badly lit, faintly absurd.

It works perfectly at home, and that is exactly the problem. Cruise cabins aren't wired for high-heat tools, so you trip the outlet, cook the converter, or spend forty minutes coaxing it into working.

2. The dual-voltage travel straightener

NO. 2

A hand plugging a hair straightener into a bathroom wall socket labeled 'Shavers Only' and 'Razors Only'.

Compact travel iron plugged into a bathroom shaver socket labelled for razors only. Indicator light off. Hand still holding the plug. Dead quiet.

Fair enough, it does fix the voltage. But it still needs an outlet, and you're still fighting for mirror space at six in the morning. The voltage problem goes away. The cruise bathroom problem doesn't.

3. The cabin hair dryer

NO. 3

A before and after image showing a woman's styled gray hair becoming frizzy and voluminous outdoors.

Wall-mounted cruise cabin dryer on its coiled cord. Beside it, the same woman two hours later on deck, hair visibly expanded and frizzing in the wind.

Cabin dryers exist to get you from dripping to not-dripping, and nothing beyond that. Your hair looks finished when you leave the bathroom. What you're looking at is frizz that hasn't expanded yet.

4. The expensive cordless tool

NO. 4

A woman sits on a bed holding her head, in a room with a large window overlooking a port.

Premium cordless styling tool sitting on its charging dock, plugged into the one reachable cabin outlet, cabin dark, ship clearly in port through the window. The irony without a caption.

Her instinct was right. She spent hundreds to get free of the outlet. But they're heavy, they take over an hour to charge, and on a cruise you're off the ship all day. She's back on that one cabin outlet overnight.

And for all that money it's still a straightener. Still sectioning, still clamping, still working blind round the back of her head.

The one I recommend

Three of those need the wall. The fourth gets you off the wall and then charges you for it in your wrist, in charge time, and in a plug you still need overnight.

Cordless made them portable. It didn't make them easy.

What actually works is a brush.

You hold it the way you've held a hairbrush every day of your life, run it through, and the heat and the shape happen in the same pass. No sectioning. No clamping. Nothing to learn at six in the morning on a moving ship.

For most of my fifteen years I had nothing like it. I'd tell women to book the salon early and watch their face fall. There wasn't a tool that solved this properly, so eventually I stopped expecting one.

It turned up near the end. One of my last seasons, a guest sat down in my chair on day six, the first time I'd seen her all week, and told me she hadn't needed us.

It's a cordless heated brush. Flown's GoBrush Pro.

THE REVEAL

Woman, late 50s, on the cabin balcony in morning light. Hair finished and moving in the breeze. GoBrush Pro held casually in one hand, clearly small enough that her hand dwarfs it. Ocean in soft focus. A phone charging cable coiled on the table beside her, making the USB-C point without a word.

I borrowed one the next morning off Sardinia and actually laughed. Not because it was clever. Because it was so simple. From that point on it was what I told everyone.

Why it holds up where the others don't

It's a brush, so there's nothing to learn. Brush and heat in one motion. No sectioning, no clamping, no second tool in your other hand. That's the single biggest difference between this and a five-hundred-dollar cordless straightener.

Cordless, and light enough that you forget you're holding it. No outlet to style, and no putting it down halfway through.

It charges on your phone cable. USB-C. No dock, no adapter, no converter. One charge covers three to four full sessions, and plenty of women get through a whole seven-day cruise without charging once.

Ready in about 20 seconds, and it fits in a makeup bag. It replaces the iron, the converter, the dryer and the round brush.

Ionic and ceramic, so the sea air stops winning. It cuts static and frizz rather than just flattening hair, which is the difference between a style that dies on the way to dinner and one that's still there at the end of the night.

CARRY-ON POLICY

VERIFIED JULY 2026

Permitted in carry-on on every major cruise line.

Battery-powered personal devices are allowed onboard. It's corded high-wattage tools that get restricted, and occasionally confiscated at embarkation.

And you don't have to do any of it in that bathroom. Take it out on the balcony. Coffee on the rail, daylight on your face instead of a fogged mirror. Five minutes later you're done.

What actually changes

The women who sorted this out didn't come back and tell me they looked better. They told me about their mornings.

They got up, did five minutes on the balcony, and went down to breakfast. They stopped planning the day around a salon slot. They stopped deciding whether or not to be in the photo.

Not looking different. Just not thinking about it.

It's a small thing to sort out before you sail.

Where to get it

A blow-dry onboard is $60 to $85, and most women who book once book twice. The GoBrush Pro costs less than one cruise's worth of that, and it comes home with you and gets used on ordinary Tuesdays.
